commentary

Mommsen suggested that this text was originally from Siracusa; however Ferrua (1940) identified this stone already in the antiquarian tradition at Rome (ap. Marini). Ferrua concluded that this is an antiquarian copy of a Roman original; Bivona is more circumspect and there is no immediate reason to assume that it is not the Roman original (however autopsy is required). One of Ferrua's principal arguments was the absence of an initial F on the Palermo stone and a vacat large enough to exclude its presence; however the lower part of the F is clearly visible in the photograph in Bivona.
