Apparatus criticus

  • Text from autopsy;
  • Manganaro 1989 reads a line above the preserved one: [- - -]tr(ibunicia) pot(estate)[- - -]; there are a number of marks (damage, etc.) on the stone on the uppermost part of the front face, above the moulding, but nothing compatible with a text.

Physical description

Support

Description
A large block of crystalline off-white marble, finished flat across the base, broken to left and right, with the front face mostly preserved. The top presents a rounded surface, partly damaged. The rear is damaged / broken off also. The front face presents three flat surfaces at different depths, with a rounded moulding separating the upper two layers; the text is on the middle of the three surfaces, below the moulding. The block seems likely to be part of an architrave or moulding from a structure.

commentary

The text was originally published by Orsi, and recorded in his taccuini at the same time, in late 1888. Orsi only recorded the letters ERPETVVSAVG, and autopsy confirms this reading. There is nothing to support the proposed additional line read by Manganaro (1989) on the upper part of the front face.
