Provenance

Place of origin
Syracusae
Provenance found
The baseappears to have been found in Acradina in 1734. Lupi 1734, the first published notice, merely refers to it as a 'basis nuper inventa Syracusis'. However, a fuller account of Lupi is provided in Schiavo 1756 (vol.1.5, p.17), stating that it was found in 1734 in the modern suburbs of Syracusa but within the ancient walls. This is in turn formulated as the part of Acradina close to the two ports of the city in the epigraphic 'Raccolta' of Cesare Gaetani (Syracusan antiquarian, 1718-1808, the manuscript compiled 1772-1784).

commentary

As John Ma, Statues and Cities (Oxford 2013) 20 n.27 notes, this is an anomalous instance of an honorific dedication where the honorand is in the genitive
