commentary

As noted already by Orsi (with Halbherr), this is a list of names. In lines 3-6, a name in the nominative is separated by one letter space from what is presumably the associated patronymic (in the genitive). In line 2, the letters ΝΤΟΣ are set somewhat further to the right than the names below, but a longer name in the nominative ending in -ντος seems the most likely resolution (since a singular genitive participle referring to e.g. office held, or activity undertaken hardly fits with a list of nominative names below). It is clear that the gap between names is in no way aligned from one line to the next. Kaibel included the text in the addenda to IG XIV, and there proposed that it should be connected to another fragment with nominative names, also from Akrai, and in Palermo museum (ISic001034), although he noted in his commentary that his description of the latter was clearly flawed, if this was the case. Pugliese Carratelli merely noted the proposal without judgement, but as Manni Piraino observes, the piece presented here is of marble, while the Palermo fragment is of the local limestone (Kaibel should have trusted his original notes!), and the two cannot be part of the same stone. A closer parallel from Akrai is offered by a fragment recording gymnasiarchs (ISic001033. Several similar marble fragments with names are preserved from Hellenistic Syracuse also. (Note that IGPalermo misreports the inventory number as 657.)
