Description
Del Muto refers in intial report to a mosaic found together with an inscription; Carnazza (a Taormina antiquarian) in a contemporary report writes of 'una lapide di marmo in cui sono incise delle lettere greche', found in two rooms adorned with mosaics and marble elements. No further elements of description are provided, but it seems that it constituted part of the pavement. Ferrua's statement that it appears to have been executed in mosaic as part of a pavement is erroneous.

Provenance

Place of origin
Tauromenium
Provenance found
Found in spring 1810 (prior to 3 April) in excavations conducted by Fagan and Del Muto in Taormina, in the context of ancient baths in 'via Crucis', assumed to be in the area of via Bagnoli Croci, below and to the south of the ancient theatre. Kaibel's statement that it was found in 1823 is a misreading of Morso. Found in two rooms decorated with mosaics and marble decorative elements. Not seen more recently.

commentary

Muscolino offers a revised reading, based upon a newly discovered apograph of 1810 from the time of the discovery, which diverges from that, based upon a separate apograph, of Morso 1823. Muscolino concludes that the text was incised on a marble plaque as part of a decorative stone floor, rather than being a mosaic text.
