commentary

The structure of the epitaph is frequent in the Christian age. The name of the deceased recurs in some Paleochristian epitaphs from Catania, such as IG 14.524 = ISic001344, IG 14.525 = ISic000964, IG 14.552 = ISic001371. Kirchhoff’s supplement at l. 3 ἐτε]λ[εύτησεν τῇ does not seem to be necessary (moreover, there is not a lacuna at this line): even if the verb τελευτάω is frequent in this formula after the indication of the years and before the indication of the day of death, a similar structure without the verb τελευτάω recurs also in IGCVO 1380 (Rome). The indication of the day of death as dies natalis is common in Christian epitaphs.
