commentary
This Christian inscription is marked by three Christograms at the beginning and one at the end. Kirchhoff’s and Kaibel’s transcription is inaccurate with regard to the division of the text into lines and was probably based on Alessi’s apographs. The reading of the sequence πρὸ ∙ τ ∙ α in l. 5 is explained by Manni Piraino (1973, 29–30) as a cutter’s error for πρὸ ∙ ∙ α. The interpretation as “the eleventh day before the Ides of November” is preferable to πρὸ γ νωνῶν, since, in this period, dating by the Ides is preferred to dating by the Nones (see IG XIV 524, likewise from Catania). The name of the deceased, Ῥοδίνη, is otherwise unattested in Sicily, although it occurs in Latin inscriptions from Magna Graecia (CIL X 2155, X 2407, both from Puteoli).
