commentary

Manganaro (1992) restores ΑΠ[ΟΛΛΩΝΟΣ] due to the elaborate type of alpha, placed on the stone before it was used as a funerary stele, as part of the front face of a large altar consecrated to that deity. However, Meligunìs Lipára XII suggests that the rough, irregular and less carefully polished appearance of this face makes this unlikely to have been an exposed facade to an altar (and it might be added that the elaborate alpha would be highly anomalous for a pre-first-century BCE date in Sicily). They argue that the two letters had the same function as the isolated characters or signs on similar tombs, in such cases usually to be connected with the original funerary use/context.
