commentary
The resolution of the final abbreviation is very uncertain. Manni-Piraino suggests also the alternative of 'dono dedit benmerentissimo', although the rendering of a Latin formula would be perhaps even more unusual. The engraved symbol of a crown at the start of line 8 perhaps suggests that Felix was also honoured with a crown (this stele was presumably part of the base of a statue?). The nominative form of the koinon's name is uncertain (kinakes or kinakoi), as is the nature of the association itself, which has been suggested to be a punic name, derived from the Canaanite ethnic, and so conceivably referencing a group of merchants from the eastern Mediterranean or North Africa; or else an association of dyers of purple. See also the entry in the Copenhagen Associations Project http://ancientassociations.ku.dk/assoc/1291.
