Physical description

Support

Description
Described by Villard as on a typical epitymbia type monument, formed of a quadrangular base supporting a small column; it is unclear from Villard's brief description (which does not record dimensions or other details) whether the inscription is on the base or the column (but parallels from the necropolis strongly suggest the base, not the column).

commentary

Villard provides no details of the stone, nor the precise location of excavation. The piece comes from trench 3 in the area of the ancient necropolis north of Pizzo Cisterna, c.1km from Piano, which appears to be consistent with the excavated necropolis of Contrada Cardusa. The inscription comes from material found in the area of a paved square and is from fragments of one of several hellenistic funerary monuments of the type common at the site, with a quadrangular base with moulding, in which is set a Doric column. The inscription was on the base of one such. If the piece comes from the necropolis, then it is unlikely to date later than the C2 BC.
