commentary

This pagan epitaph is very fragmentary and it is not possible to give an overall interpretation. It is possible that the deceased was a Διόδωρος or Διοδώρα, names also attested in Sicily (LGPN 3A: 127), while at l. 3 recurs the traditional formula of the epitaphs πολλὰ καμών (also καμοῦσα or καμόντα are compatible with the traces after Μ). At l. 2 -τρον can be part of the words οἰκτρόν (see in Catania, Manganaro 1999: 46 nr. 27) or πέτρον referred to the tomb (see for example IG 14.2050), frequent in epitaphs. At l. 4 κύπαλλ- can be a mistake for κύπελλ-, indicating a type of pottery recurring in funerary epigrams (see AP 7.339 ll. 7-8).
