Original discovery not recorded. Korhonen thinks the inscription comes from Catania or at least from another city of the north-eastern Sicily since it was not published by Kaibel.

Korhonen considers the inscription not urban because of the structure of the epitaph and the palaeography. Moreover, the name of the deceased, Ἐπαφρόδιτος, is highly attested in Sicily (see LGPN 3A: 145) and in another inscription from Catania (Libertini 1937: 78).
