commentary
This inscription is probably an epitaph, but it is not possible to define its structure due to its fragmentary nature. The first name is probably Ἱλάρα (if, as Korhonen’s supplement suggests, the deceased or the dedicant at l. 1 is a woman) or Ἱλαρίων or Ἵλαρος (for these names in Sicily, see LGPN 3A: 218-219). At l. 2, Korhonen cautiously assumed a form of χρηστός. Another possibility is to think of [ἔζ]ησ(εν): the abbreviation of the verb could justify the space after ΕΣ as in IG 14.509 = ISic001330. At l. 4, Korhonen assumed the name Ζώσιμος (οr doubtfully a form of ζώω, see αἴζωσεν of IG 14.490 = ISic001313).
