commentary

The epitaph presents the traditional expression ἐνθάδε κεῖται (for the phonetic development of κεῖται into κεῖτε from the 3rd cent. AD, see in Catania IG 14.532 = ISic001351, Libertini (1930) 44 no.7 = ISic001629), followed by the name of the deceased, the age and the date of death (in this case expressed with the verb τελευτάω in the aorist form), which is frequent in Christian epitaphs. In this case, there is the mention (rare in Christian epitaphs) of the profession of the deceased, ἰατρός. For other Sicilian inscriptions mentioning doctors, see Rizzo, F. P. (1989), "La menzione del lavoro nelle epigrafi della Sicilia antica: Per una storia della mentalità", pp.62-64 and Manganaro, G. (1994), "Iscrizioni, epigrafi ed epigrammi in Greco della Sicilia orientale di epoca romana", in "Mélanges de l’École Francaise de Rome: Antiquité" 106(1), 79–118, at p.107.
