commentary

Orsi's transcription and editing of the original report of Merlini is not entirely faithful, and Messina's reading of lines 8-9 as another name seems preferable. The symbols left uninterpreted by Orsi must be numerals and find approximate parallels (even if not certain interpretation) among other later Hellenistic Sicilian texts (see e.g. the gallery texts from the Euryalos fortifications).
