Apparatus criticus

  • line.1: Orsi (NSA): Riam. . . .; Orsi (Taccuini): RIAMIR . The first three characters are almost certainly RIA, followed by four verticals grouped in two pairs, either or both of which would be compatible with M as in line 2, followed by two further marks slightly above the line; Orsi's suggestion is entirely plausible.
  • line.2: Orsi: IOREMFACI; the top of a vertical is visible at the start of the line
  • line.3: The trace of a downward right slanting stroke is visible at the upper right end of the line, compatible with V, X or Y (also noted by Orsi, Taccuini)

commentary

This text is on the reverse of what was originally a large monumental Latin inscription of the first or second century AD (see ISic001671), and so this text is presumably secondary re-use of the stone and the later text from its form. Line 2 can reasonably be restored to suggest that this was a text recording the rebuilding or reconstruction of a structure of some sort. On that basis, the word in line 1 is perhaps most likely to be 'memoria' or 'gloria', and line 3 may contain reference to the individual responsible. The text does not appear to have been republished or discussed since Orsi. Orsi recorded it in the first of his taccuini, prior to publishing it in the NSA. Curiously, in neither case did he note the presence of a text on the reverse, which fact is recorded in the inventory (it is possible that the text was already fixed to the wall for display when he saw it?).
