commentary

Pace lists this and one other text-bearing fragment of stone (ISic004402) at the end of his report on the excavation of the basilica at Salemi. From Pace's account, this appears to have been found in re-use inas construction material for the basilica, but as he notes, it clearly derives from a different and earlier structure. It is however wholly unclear from Pace's account (and the photograph, at col.733-734 fig.14) whether the inscription is original to the block and its original architectural purpose, or a later addition, and the photograph is insufficiently clear for any certainty. Current location of the block is unknown to me, and I have not so far found any reference to it in more recent literature.
