commentary

The inscription is written, according to Arena (1986) in the Megarian alphabet but was found in Gela. According to Jeffery (1961) the object may have ended up in Gela following the events that caused the conquest of Megara by Syracuse. It should be noted that the name Πανχάρες is recurrent in Megara Nisea, as Arena (1989) points out reporting parallels with IG VII 1-11, 12, 13, 42 and IG IV 926 (= IG IV 1[2] 71), and occurrs once in Akraiphia, Boeotia (IG VII 2750). The text, which denounces the name of its possessor, refers to its use during symposia.
