commentary

The fragment, the rim of a plate of Corinthian style but of local production, bears a very well readable, though incomplete, text. The noun ϙορύνθιος has been interpreted by Gallavotti (1977) as the name of the vessell that could be related to the term κορυνθεύς, meaning 'basket' (cf. Hsch. s.v. κορυνθεύς). On the basis of this hypothesis Arena (1989) suggested the following reconstruction [το͂ δεῖνα δαίδ]αλμα hο ϙορύνθιος. The inscription would thus be an artist's signature or dedication with reference to the fineness of the artefact itself. The nature of the vessel, of Corinthian imitation, and the use of the word could suggest - as Arena has suggested - an allusion to the Corinthian matrix of the artefact.
