commentary
From the meagre fragments of the epigraph, Gallavotti hypothesises that it may be a dedication to the Dioscuri (on whose cult in Megara Iblea see Pareti 1920). Manni Piraino ascribes the alphabetical features to the Argolis area and Arena suggests, based on a hypothetical reconstruction of the second part of the text as ἀντ’ἀλκᾶς (therefore in Doric dialect), that the inscription can be ascribed to western Argolis. If the hypothesis of reconstruction as ἀλκά ('valiant, courageous', a rare word used in poetry, cf. e.g. h.Hom.28.3, Pi.O.9.72) were correct, one might think, especially given the dactylic incipit of the first part of the text, that it is a poetic text.
