commentary

The name Skytas may appear in another inscription on pottery from Gela, in which it is, however, partially integrated. The same formula occurs, although in the present tense and not in the imperative as in this case, in a funerary inscription from Thera: με θίνγανε (IG XII 3, 451). The formula is probably intended for potential thieves of the vessel, perhaps used in the case of particularly well-made items. It is also found in a well-known inscription from Cumae (DGE 786) hὸς δ’ ἄν με κλέψει, θυφλὸς ἔσται.
