commentary
Inscription, probably votive, found at Bitalemi. Arena (IGASM 2[2], no. 47) favours a date between 450 and 440, while Dubois attributes the inscription to around 500. We agree with the latter hypothesis, based on palaeography (see the rendering of gamma and lambda). The term could be related to the root of the masculine hydronym ΓÎλας, the feminine toponym ΓÎλα, and the masculine anthroponyms ΓÎλων, Γελώιος, identifying the name as a feminine in -ωι (Cordano 1985, 158-9). Arena reconstructs the name as Γελ(λ)ο͂ι (Γελλῷ), referring to Sappho, PLF 178 and the homonymous mythical creature, which could be linked to the cult of Demeter and might be an epithet of the Demeter worshipped at Bitalemi. If this is the case, a connection between this name and the toponym should be considered, although any derivation or relationship between the two remains obscure.
