commentary

The text has been variously interpreted. Dubois reads it as Εὐαρίδας if the third letter is an alpha (thus admitting a different ductus for the two alphas in the inscription) or as Εὐχ<α>ρίδας if the third sign should be read as a chi (a 'red' variant expected in Gela). Arena reads as Εὐαρίδας also admitting a different ductus for the two alphas, the first of which he defines as 'Sikan' (though, this would rather be a 'Sikel' alpha similar to those attested in Sikel inscriptions from eastern Sicily, cf. e.g. ISic003364) or as Εὐχρίδας admitting the presence of a red chi. However, we seem to be able to see a division between the first part of the word and the second, marked (perhaps) by some sort of punctuation. Moreover, the third sign, rather than a red chi or a Sikel alpha, seems to be a corrected upsilon (a dittography) to obtain another letter, perhaps a kappa. In addition to the unusual ductus of the third sign, which could be the result of a correction, the aberrant ductus of delta, rho and sigma could suggest a text that is alien to the Geloan context.
