commentary

Clay loom weight found, together with about 30 others (ISic020504 to ISic020534) all bearing the same inscription, in the G1 chapel of the sanctuary of Bitalemi near Gela. The inscription, incised on the clay before firing, probably contains an adverb or adjective with propitiatory intent for the offered object (Orlandini 1965, 455-456; Arena IGASM no.58). It could also be the anthroponym Θεότιμος, although the first hypothesis is more likely given the votive context of the object.
