commentary

Inscription in clear letters under the foot of an intact pelike, depicting a scene with Dionysus and a satyr. The first interpretation of the text is due to Halbherr (referred to by Orsi 1906), who interpreted λε̄κυθίδες as a measure followed by the number twenty ΔΔ (Orsi also reads this way, while Arena corrects with ΗΔΔ). Again according to Halbherr, the preceding number, indicated in accordance with the Attic system, should be read as 'ten thousand and one drachma and four obols'. Arena (see translation, which we accept) assumes a correspondence between the two values.
