commentary
According to Arena, the expression - which is itself an oxymoron - is to be understood as equivalent to εὐφημέω, 'use words of good omen' or 'avoid all unlucky words', a meaning that would be confirmed by the sacred context in which the vase was found, the sanctuary of the indigenous centre of Sabucina.
