commentary
This loom weight bears the same inscription as another, found in the same context ISic020571 and datable to the same period and a third, which bears the name Κύπρα ISic020569. Arena assumes that the last loom weight, ISic020569, is older because it bears the name without the phenomenon of epenthesis, which seems to have occurred in the present inscription and in ISic020571 and which must have occurred after the 'regular' use of the name (Κύπρα). The hypothesis is plausible, although judging by the nature of the document, incised with little care, it could also be the work of two different engravers, one of whom incorrectly 'misspells' the name by inserting the epenthesis in the two loomweights he incises. The name Κύπρα, as noted by Arena, could be identifiable with the name Κυπάρα, glossed by Hesychius (κ 4636 ed. Latte) as ἡ ἐν Σικελίᾳ κρήνη Ἀρέθουσα and thus would be another name by which the source (and nymph?) Arethousa was also known. The same name appears on a lamina discovered in the area of Palermo (ISic030026).
