commentary

The inscription has been interpreted by all editors as 'gift of' + an onomastic formula. It is on a fragment of a tile found in contrada Mendolito together with another one apparently written by the same hand. The two documents were initially interpreted as two funerary inscriptions (Manganaro 1961b, 110), then as a single votive inscription dedicated by magistrates to deities (Pisani 1964, 127; Whatmough 1968, 576-577; Ribezzo 1923, 224) and, more recently (Cultraro 2005), as a single inscription on the roofing slabs of a building (a house, or more likely a 'public' building) that would bear the dedication of a member of the community financing the structure. Whether these are parts of the same inscription is, however, difficult to prove due to the lack of specific details on the archaeological context and a connection - if not palaeographic - between this inscription and the other one that bears another (and different) onomastic formula (maybe the name of another donor). The alphabet is the typical one of Sikel inscriptions from the Etna area. Worthy of note, in particular, is the presence of the arrow-shaped alpha, the digamma (with value of v, see also ISic003364).
