commentary

The inscription was initially interpreted as Greek by Comparetti (consulted by Orsi himself) who read a verse from the comedy Ephialtes by Phrynicus (Comparetti 1919-1920, 200-203), followed in the Greek interpretation by Manganaro (1968, 202). Subsequent editors soon recognised its non-Greek nature: thus Lazzarini (1973-1974, 344-346), who attributed it to the Etruscan area; Agostiniani and Cordano (2002, 82-83) who, supporting a more likely thesis - partly as a result of comparisons with other indigenous sites in eastern Sicily - suggested that it is an inscription in an indigenous language (i.e. Sikel) that nevertheless presents several linguistic loans from Greek. In particular the word 'poteron' = gr. ποτήριον, from which it could be inferred that the inscription, also considering the type of vessel, is a ludic one which refers to the symposial context.
