commentary

The staff is reported as having been found in the territory of Villadoro, near Nicosia; but as Manganaro observes, no conclusion can be drawn from this regarding the original location of Ichana (=Ichaninos / Ichaninon / Sichana / Sichaninos / Sichaninon), which is otherwise only attested in Steph. Byz. s.v. Ἴχανα and in a small number of coins, and which Manganaro speculates may have been located towards the south-eastern coast; Dubois, by contrast, suggests on the basis of the alphabet that it should be in the hinterland of Himera on the north coast. It is not clear from the photograph and reported readings whether the text on side C is thought to have been erased or simply worn away; given the layout, it does not seem likely that the text on sides B or D included the second word.
