commentary

This document is one of a large deposit (c. 150) of lead tesserae found in a storeroom of Athena's sanctuary at the archaeological site of Kamarina. The lamina appears to be used twice (see Cordano 1992, pp. 53-54). To the first use would correspond the text Φάυλλο[ς on face a, ͱενάτα on face b. The second use is associated with the text .ΔΔΔΔ sign_uninterpreted | φρ]άτρα on face a and the text Ματρο|δο̄́ρο̄ on face b. In the second use, face a is used as face b and vice versa, and the writing is upside down on both faces if compared to the first use. The first engraving, the one related to the first use, uses smaller letters than the second one. Moreover, the first text has not been erased in order to engrave the second, therefore it is clearly visible. The uninterpreted sign after the numeral on face a could be, according to Cordano 1992 (p. 54-55), a specific marker. See also ISic030200. For a similar reuse of the tessera, within the same fratra, see also ISic030198.
