commentary
Arena hypothesises that the personal name belonging with the patronymic on line 7 has been omitted, suspecting a third instance of 'Sostratos'. As noted by Arena, this document, as well as an interesting contribution to the relatively small number of early Hellenistic defixiones in Sicily (c.7), provides important evidence of the Greek presence in Messana in the period of Mamertine occupation in the mid-third century BCE. The defixio is one of 9 lead lamina recovered in recent excavations in this part of Messana, but the others are either anepigraphic or too fragile to be opened at present.
