Apparatus criticus
- Text after Jeffery 1961 (LSAG, p. 273 and no. 48), as reproduced by Arena 2002 (IGASMG II² 4). ;
- 1: Jeffery's restoration Διὸ[ς ἆθλον] το͂ Γελοαίο̄ is adopted here. Ebert 1972 restores two hexameters, Διὸ[ς ἆθλα / hίπ(π)οι νικάσας πέδο ἐ(κ)κλε]το͂ Γελοαίο̄, interpreting the dedication as the prize for a victory in the horse race. IvO 142 and earlier editions instead reconstruct a victory in the chariot race. Since the original extent of the plinth is unknown, all extended restorations remain conjectural.

commentary
The object was interpreted in IvO 142 as a bronze plaque attached to a larger stone base, but since Jeffery it has generally been identified as the plinth of a small bronze statuette. One dowel-hole survives, and the plinth was originally attached by two lateral clamps to a larger pedestal, probably of marble. Because neither the original dimensions of the plinth nor the statuette are preserved, the longer restorations and the identification of the represented animal remain uncertain. The dedicator is generally identified with Pantares, father of the Geloan tyrants Cleandros and Hippokrates (Hdt. 7.154), although the identification cannot be established from the inscription alone.
