Queen of the United Kingdom and Hanover from 1830 to 1837, as the wife of King William IV. She was born in 1792 in Saxe-Meiningen, then part of the Holy Roman Empire (now in Germany) as the eldest child of Georg I, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, and his wife Luise Eleonore. Adelaide married Prince William, Duke of Clarence and St Andrews, in 1818. William became King in 1830 after his elder brother Frederick, Duke of York, died childless. Adelaide died in 1849 at Bentley Priory in Middlesex.
