Description
Most likely a marble funerary plaque, but no information is provided by Fazello or Gualtherus (Bitto places unjustified faith in Gualtherus' placing of the text within the form of a base with mouldings top and bottom, ignoring the fact that this is a standard generic way of framing a text in Gualtherus' edition).

Thermae Himeraeae
Provenance found
First recorded in Termini Imerese by Fazello, as one of several texts in private houses in the town, in this case specifically 'in domo Garofali'. Gualtherus subsequently (1624) recorded it among the inscriptions of Messana, where he saw it 'in vico Byzantinorum apud Pet. Stagnum eq.'

Current location

Gualtherus offers the last eye-witness account and it has not been seen since.

commentary

The reports in Fazello and Gualtherus make it highly likely that this stone was originally found in Termini (like the others attested in private houses in the 16th and 17th century in the town), but was subsequently transferred to a collector in Messana, where Gualtherus saw it. Bitto provides an extended discussion of the onomastics, but the assumption that it is from Messana is unjustified, and her attribution of the reading 'Adventus' to a correction of Mommsen is to ignore the original report in Fazello / misread Mommsen's apparatus. It seems preferable however to follow Gualtherus' report of the form 'coiugi' over Fazello's likely 'normalisation' of 'coniugi'.
