Apparatus criticus

  • Text of Gualtherus and Franz;
  • 1: Kaibel: [..]πιδος Σα[ρ]α[πί]ωνος. The suggestion of a lacuna at the start of the line is entirely speculative on the part of Kaibel.
  • 2: Gualtherus marks a '.' between the two words, but whether this is intended to signify an interpunct or a missing character is unclear.

commentary

The text appears to be on a relief, possibly funerary, of which Gualtherus provides a drawing. There is no record of autopsy after Gualtherus and it appears to be lost. Kaibel's attempt to suggest a comprehensible text ignores the presentation of Gualtherus; Kaibel's reference to Gualtherus fails to indicate that the text is in the addenda, p.100, not the main sequence.
